The serene ambience at Bungalow 9; Pan Seared Crab Cakes

Change is the only constant they say. So yes, Mumbai seemed much different this time to what I had remembered of it from my visit six years ago. What I love about the city is the vibe. Everything seems to be bustling with life. And when it comes to food, people are ever so ready to experience different cuisines and new concepts. With the extensive culinary landscape in Mumbai, I had much to catch up during my weekend trip and so my itinerary was soon packed with the must-visits.

Amongst the highly recommended list of restaurants, one was Bungalow 9. Located at Bandra, this bungalow-style restaurant with various seating arrangements – a lounge bar, the courtyard, a terrace and private dining rooms – seemed liked the perfect option for grabbing a quick bite and a few drinks before heading to the blues festival. We chose a table at the outdoor section right below the ancient clock.

collage-2While I started the afternoon with a chilled KF beer, the stud decided to try a cocktail, and an extra spicy Bloody Mary at that! The drink seemed benign when it was brought to the table but as I took a sip I felt the heat and how! The stud ofcourse, loved it and enjoyed it till the last drop.

The menu includes a range of dishes from across the globe such as dim sums, khao suey, Thai red curry, brick oven pizzas, pastas, tacos, labneh, Moroccan peri peri chicken, and so on. Each dish also has a suggested drink to pair it along with which I thought was a helpful inclusion. For starters, we ordered Pan Seared Crab Cakes and Peppered Calamari to satisfy our seafood cravings. The crab cakes had a smooth texture interrupted by little chunks of veggies and was served with roasted pepper and chilli remoulade, which is a French aioli or mayonnaise based condiment. The calamari was fresh, crumb coated, cooked just right and was served with garlic aioli.

Slow Cooked BBQ Pork Spare Ribs

If time wasn’t a constraint, we could have sat and enjoyed the pleasant ambience and the breezy Mumbai weather for hours! But moving on to mains, we decided to order just one dish, and after much contemplation with tempting dishes like New Zealand Lamb Shank, Confit of Kid Lamb Leg, Jack Daniel’s BBQ Brushed 6 oz Tenderloin, Norwegian Salmon with Ancho Chilli and Organic Honey Reduction, and the like, we ordered our common favourite meat, Slow Cooked BBQ Pork Spare Ribs. The meat was tender soaking in the sweet and malty flavour of the barbeque sauce, easily fell off the bone, and went well with the mashed potatoes and corn served along with it.

Wish we had more time for dessert! Unfortunately we had to rush. But what did catch my attention was the Amaretto Soaked Almond Steamed Pudding, with peach and mascarpone stew and caramel foam. Definitely visiting the restaurant again and soon to try more from their scrumptious menu!
